History
The tournament will hold its 120th edition in 2026, solidifying its status as one of the most traditional events on the ATP Tour calendar. Since its inception in 1892, it has been a part of the ATP Tour, thereby establishing itself as one of the most ancient and revered tennis events worldwide.
Prior to the creation of the Tennis Masters Series in the early 1990s, this tournament was known as the German Open. Renowned for its long-standing history and prestigious status, it has remained one of the most prestigious tournaments globally.
Between the years 1978 and 2008, the tournament held the esteemed title of being a Masters Series event (now ATP Masters 1000). However, due to calendar restructuring, it subsequently transitioned to an ATP 500.
Roger Federer stands out as the most decorated player in the history of this tournament, having clinched the title on four occasions.
